President Gary with representatives of Charities

The Tree of Remembrance at Tesco Lisburn has been felled post Christmas after a very successful period.

An amazing close to £14000 has been raised for local Charities in the few weeks before Christmas.

Thanks are  due to Tescos for their support and to the great generosity of the Lisburn public in helping us to achieve this result. Also to Smyth Pattersons who allowed a collection on a few days other Charities were collecting at Tescos.

Also thanks to the volunteers of the Charities who helped with collection and to local Scouts for their support.

Rotarian Paul Duggan oversaw the event and a huge amount of work was put in by PP Sam Patterson (gangmaster) in managing the volunteers and the placing of ribbons on the Tree

The opening of the Tree was a great success and the Club members and other Charity members have been doing great work manning the collection over the first four days. The response from the public has also been very generous.

  • Tree of Remembrance at Tescos, Lisburn

Tree of remembranceThe Rotary Club of Lisburn  with the assistance of Tescos have erected a Tree of Remembrance at the main Tescos in Lisburn.

The tree will be manned by volunteers from Lisburn Rotary Club, from 10 am on the 11th December every day  until the 23rd of December.

The Tree will be opened by the Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh  Councillor Thomas Beckett at 4.30pm on the 11th December when the Mayor will place the first ribbon.

People will write a message in memory of someone special  relative or friend, on a yellow ribbon and this will be hung on the tree.

There will be no charge  but donations made will collected and distributed to Charities supported by the Rotary  Club, namely Cancer Fund for  Children, Mencap, British Heart Foundation Diabetes UK and other smaller local charities

This  is a chance to remember your loved ones in a simple but poignant way in the midst of the Christmas rush by placing a ribbon on the tree.

  • Christmas Community Project 2015

jim-matchettChairman of Community Jim Matchett and his Committee have set a target to fund and distribute 100 Hampers for Christmas  to  Lisburn families suffering in the recession.

Handbags, scarves and jewelry were donated by Club Members and a sale was held in Lisburn Square on Saturday 14th November.Unfortunately poor weather and other factors meant that only £600 was raised on the day. It is hoped to sell the remaining items at a later date.

In tandem with this fund raising a bottle collection has been taking place over the last few months with each member collecting their loose change in a plastic bottle.

It is hoped to provide for £20 in each hamper and to augment this with cans of food donated by members as well as donations from retailers such as Greens of Lisburn

Members are reminded bottles and food cans must be returned at Friday meeting on 11th December

Members and Guests at Special lunch 13/11/15 with the Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh Thomas Beckett

The members of the club were encouraged to invite friends and possible new members to a special lunch on Friday 13th November.

President Gary gave a presentation about Rotary and what Rotary could do for members and what members could do to  for Rotary. It was a great opportunity to  bring the message of Rotary to people who perhaps new little about  what Rotary does.

The feedback from guest was very positive and hopefully might encourage some of them to join the Rotary family
