  • Winner of Youth Leadership Competition

youth-leadership-winner-007Mary Kurian winner of the Rotary Club of Lisburn Youth Leadership Competition 2011 is presented with diploma by President Dale and Henry McNally organiser of the competition

From Dubai to Kerala (India), to Lisburn. This was the path taken by Mary Kurian and her family in search of a better life and the chance for her mother to enhance her nursing skills. Her first contact with the Rotary Club of Lisburn was during the course of last year’s collection in support of Polio Plus through the Tree of Life at Tesco’s. Mother and daughter were aware of the traditional description of the condition as Infantile Paralysis affecting many children in their native India. They visited Tesco’s several  times and were impressed by the commitment and knowledge displayed by the Club representatives whose task it was to collect money. But most of all they were impressed by the willingness of the club members to give up their time for such a worthy cause for people so  far away.

When information in the Rotary Youth Leadership was dispalyed on the school 6th form notice board in September, she willingly sought the support of the school for her entry. She was a very worth winner of the schools final for the Lisburn district and an excellent representative of the Club

  • Brian Burke,Past President and Paul Harris Fellow

Brian Burke Partners Lunch 2011It is with great sadness we have to report the death on Thursday 18th August of Past President Brian Burke.

PP Brian was an outstanding member of the Rotary Club of Lisburn for 27 years having joined in 1984.

A Paul Harris fellow Brian was the perfect role model for any aspiring Rotarian.

Oustandingly in all his years of service he could boast of 100% attendance.

Brian was a well known and a highly acclaimed ladies hairdresser with salons in Lisburn and Belfast.

He was a former member of Lisburn Round table and a member of the Lisburn 41 club until his untimely death in the Royal Victoria Hospital

Brian was admitted to the City hospital in June for tests in connection with a heart problem. He was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital for Surgery.

The heart operation was a success but sadly complications set in and despite the excellent care of staff n the Intensive Care Unit, he never fully recovered and passed away on Thursday.

Brian is survived by his wife Edith, daughter Gaenor and  his sister Avril. His  brothers John and Tom are travelling from Canada for the funeral on Tuesday August 23rd at Legacurry Presbyterian Church at 2.00pm and we offer our deepest sympathy to all the family.

We all loved Brian very much and he will be missed greatly in Rotary and especially in the Kitchen Club which he loved so much.

A  full obituary from Gordon Hanna, Brians long time friend is on the Club News page.
